Yard Sale!!!

Troop 1905 is having a Yard Sale on Friday, April 8th and Saturday, April 9th. The times will be 8am - 4pm both days. The location is 416 Windemere Rd in Clarksville, IN.

It's Spring Cleaning time so here's a little motivation to get you going on it.

WE NEED YOUR STUFF!!! :) Please bring your donations to Regina Brown by April 7th. (She also said you can call her and she will pick them up, 'cause she's nice like that!!)

We will also be having a bake sale so donations of baked goods would be greatly appreciated as well!!! Cupcakes, cakes, cookies, fudge, brownies... the treat kind, not the scout kind :) It's all good!

Regina is building 2 Easter baskets (one for a boy and one for a girl) to raffle off at the yard sale. Please bring a little something to the April 7th meeting to add to the baskets.

Finally, we need parents and girl scouts to help work the yard sale and the bake sale booth. Please let Regina know when you will be able to help out.

Valentine's Day Party

Troop 1905 will be having our Valentine's Day Party during our meeting this Thursday, February 3rd. Please send candy or cookies and 24 Valentine's Day Cards with your scout to exchange with others. Happy day of love to you all!!!

Troop 1905 Juniors

ATTENTION ALL JUNIORS!!!

On Tuesday, February 8th, at 6pm, Troop 1905 Juniors will meet at Adrienne & Company at 129 West Court Avenue, Jeffersonville, IN. This meeting will be working on their badge they started on 1-6-2011 called “MY COMMUNITY” on page 52 in their badge books.

U of L Women's Basketball Game January 22nd

We are going to the LOUISVILLE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GAME JANUARY 22nd at 2PM. THIS IS TO SUPPORT NATIONAL GIRLS AND WOMEN IN SPORTS DAY.

Early festivities for Girl Scouts start at 1 PM at the Arena, doors open at 12:45. Tickets will be picked up at Will-Call. We will be in a special section for Girl Scouts and their families. The girls will have a chance to show us their dance moves during the Boogie-Cam on the big screen. The girls will receive the Official Women’s Basketball Girl Scout Patch. They will also have the opportunity to hang out with the U of L Women’s Athletic Teams. PLEASE HAVE YOUR SCOUT WEAR A VEST, SASH OR A GIRL SCOUT SHIRT TO STAND OUT FROM ALL THE REST IN THE CROWD!!!

We will need to depart the middle school on the 22nd at 11:45 am and go to yum center! They have some fun things to do for the Scouts before the 2pm game!!!

Happy New Year Troop 1905!!! We hope your family enjoyed a happy holiday season with a beautiful white Christmas here in Southern Indiana.

We have alot planned for 2011 and are kicking off the new year with COOKIE SALES!!!

Girl Scout Cookie Time

That's right it's Girl Scout Cookie time. There is no better way to warm up those winter time chills than with a yummy Thin Mint and some hot chocolate. Scouts can take orders now and should have a cookie sales packet, provided at the Christmas party at Bob Evans. If you did not receive one, please contact Regina Brown for your packet ASAP. The clocks ticking and we need to get moving. More sales means more money for the Troop for badges, Try-Its, fun activities and for our Gatlinburg trip this summer. Hear are some important dates to remember:

Order forms are due to Regina on January 20th (yes that is NOT a typo... 16 days) so get busy. Remember, money is collected when cookies are delivered, not when orders are taken.

Cookie Booths start February 26th and end March 20th. All girls need to work one booth and girls going on the Gatlinburg trip need to work two or more booths. A sign-up sheet with be available February 20th.

Cookie delivery will start February 14th.

All money is due to Regina NO LATER than the March 17th meeting.

Our Troop goal is 8,050 boxes, which averages out to 350 boxes per girl. It sounds like a lot but these girls can do it!!

Gatlinburg, TN Trip

Our Gatlinburg, TN trip is scheduled for June 24th - June 27th. The due date has been extended to sign up for the Gatlinburg, TN trip. Deposits are due to Regina by January 20th and are $50 per person. An additional $150 for each "parent/none scout" going is due April 21st.

We have reservations for 5 cabins at Clabough Campgrounds. Each cabin sleeps 6, has a fully equipped kitchen, A/C and bathroom. The camp site is awesome!!! There are 2 swimming pools, a lazy river and a game room all on site. This is a very clean and well cared for camp ground facility. Regina has also planned some exciting things for us to do!

We will be going to Wonder Works, website here for more info, which is an upside-down amusement park for the mind, featuring over 100 interactive exhibits to spark the imagination. The girls will be able to earn a Wonder Works badge.

Regina is also looking into Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum. We will add more information on the trip when reservations are made.
Don't forget!!! January 20th is the latest you can sign-up for our trip. It's going to be a great time, so be sure to get your deposit in on time.

Regina is also planning something special for the girls who will not be able to go on the Gatlinburg, TN trip.

This month's meetings are on January 6th and 20th.

NO MEETING TONIGHT - 12/16/10

There will be no meeting tonight due to the ice storm closing the schools... and being un-safe to drive and all.

We will have our Christmas party at Bob Evans in Clarksville at 6:30pm on Monday, December 20th. Regina has coupons for the girls to eat free. Please remember to bring a wrapped $5 present for the girls to exchange. Also, if you would like to send a couple dollars with your scout, we will have small items from the Holiday Bazaar for them to purchase for 25 cents each to give to their parents or grandparents for Christmas.

Girl Scouts area 15 Cookie Kick-Off Lock-in

Please join us for the Cookie Kick-Off Lock-in from 8pm-8am at Speed Memorial Church 328 US HWY 31, Sellersburg, IN. Cost is $10 per scout. Papa John’s Pizza will be provided. The Holiday Bazaar will follow at Speed Memorial Church. Here is the flyer for more information (double click to enlarge):

Girl Scouts area 15 Holiday Bazaar
The Girl Scouts area 15 Holiday Bazaar is Saturday, Dec 11, from 9:00am - 3:00pm, at Speed Memorial Church 328 US HWY 31, Sellersburg, IN. We need girls to volunteer to work the booth in 1 to 2 hour shifts. Please call Regina to let her know what time you can bring your scout.
Be sure to tell your friends and family about it. There will be gifts for sale from .25 cents on up. Come out and have some fun. 103.1 will be there from noon - 1p.m. Chili, hotdogs will be available.

Troop 1905 Christmas Party

Our Christmas Party will be during our next meeting on Dec. 16^th. Please bring a wrapped $5 gift for your scout to exchange with the other girls and also a dish to share. We would like some of you to bring things other than desserts, cookie and candy. A little sugar goes a long way in a small room with 20 giggle scouts. J

November News... Take 2!!!

Our Camping trip to Camp Stem Adventure Center was a HUGE success!! Almost our entire troop attended. The girls had a blast and showed that they were true Girl Scouts. We are very proud of you girls!! All this never would have been possible without the hard work and planning by out fearless leader, Regina Brown, and the hard work of the moms that went along. We are already looking forward to our next camping adventure.

Don't forget Fall Product money is due by November 28th. Please contact Regina if you haven't yet.

We have a busy month coming up. Our December meetings will be December 2nd and 16th. Our Christmas party will be held during our December 16th meeting. Each girl will need to bring a $5 gift and a covered dish. We will pass around a covered-dish sign-up sheet at the December 2nd meeting.

Our Troop will also be adopting a less fortunate family for Christmas this year. We are making crafts to sell at the Holiday Bazaar on December 11th at Speed Church. This money will go towards caring for this family. We will also be accepting donations of can goods and toys. We will need Troop voluntees to work the Bazaar booth from 8am-4pm. We will have a sign-up sheet for this at the December 2nd meeting, as well. Speed Church will be having a Lock-In on December 10th. If you are interested in going, please contact Regina. The cost for the Lock-In is $10.

Deposits for our Gatlinburg, TN trip on June 24-27, 2011, are due by December 16th. The deposite is $50 per person to hold your spot.

Camp Stem Camping List

All scouts should bring the following with them this weekend:

Sleeping bag (or sheet and blanket)
Pillow
Flashlight
2 pairs of pajamas
3 comfortable outfits (weather appropriate)
Hiking shoes or Tennis shoes (bring 2 pairs of shoes in case 1 gets wet)
Flip flops for shower
Jacket
Gloves (if cold enough)
1 towel and washcloth
Toothbrush and tooth paste
Shampoo, conditioner and soap
Brush
Deoderant, etc.
Hairdryer
Poncho (disposable ones are great!!)

Please lable all items with your scout's name.
Do NOT bring ANY electronics (i.e. no ipods, gameboys, cell phones, etc.)
If the girls need to make a call or if you need to reach them, the Troop leader's phone is available for their use.

Please meet at Clarksville Middle School at 5:45pm on Friday, 11/12.

November News

Happy November!

Troop 1905 has a fun filled month ahead!

November 6th we will be going to Derby Dinner Playhouse to see the True Story of the Three Little Pigs. For those of you who are attending, please meet in the Derby Dinner lobby at 8:45am for breakfast at 9:00 am. Show starts at 10:00 am.

November 12th - 14th we will be going campling at Camp Stem Adventure Center in Laconia, IN. We will meet Friday, Nov. 12th, at 6:00 pm at the Clarksville Middle School and scouts will need to be picked up at the middle school at 1:00 pm on Sunday, Nov. 14th. Our troop will be sleeping in one of the lodges. Each scout will need to bring a sleeping bag and pillow, a dunk mess kit (small mesh bag with plastic plate, bowl and silverware) and 2 changes of clothes. Please send a coat with your scout as it is likely to be chilly in the evenings. At the Nov. 4th meeting, we will have a list of items for each scout to bring to contribute to the meals for the camping trip. We hope all girls can make it. We are sure to have a great time!

Cadettes and Juniors will be working on holiday crafts during the next 3 meetings to sell in the Holiday Bazaar that will be held on Saturday, Dec. 11th.

Brownies don't forget to bring in your 50 cents to each meeting. We would like the girls to earn this money so parents please don't just give them the money. Girls ask your parents, grandparents and neighbors if there is anything you can do to earn this money.

Meeting Reminder: November meetings will be on Nov. 4th and Nov. 16th.

S’mores here we come!!!!

S'mores

Original S'mores
Serves 8

8 sticks (for toasting marshmallows)
16 graham crackers
8 bars of chocolate
16 marshmallows

Toast marshmallows slowly over a fire or in a fireplace until brown. Put a piece of chocolate on top of a graham cracker, put a toasted marshmallow on top, then add another graham cracker. Press gently together. The marshmallow will melt the chocolate. Enjoy!

Banana S'mores
Serves 4

3 bananas, sliced
4 whole graham crackers
4 tablespoons chocolate syrup
4 tablespoons non-fat vanilla frozen yogurt

Make four sandwiches by layering items on small dessert dishes. Place a graham cracker on the bottom of each dish, and add a few pieces of banana on top. Top each cracker with chocolate syrup and frozen yogurt and add second cracker on top to make a sandwich. Serve or freeze for up to one hour before serving.

Mexican S'mores
Serves 10

1 package flour tortillas
1 jar crunchy peanut butter
1 bag semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 bag of miniature marshmallows

Spread the peanut butter on the tortillas and sprinkle on chocolate chips and marshmallows. Fold each tortilla in half and put on a grill or in a pan on the stove for a few minutes and enjoy!

S'mores Brownies
Serves 24

1 package of brownie mix
1 1/2 cups miniature marshmallows
6 graham crackers
12 ounces milk chocolate, coarsely chopped

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare brownies according to package instructions and bake for 15 minutes. In a separate bowl, break graham crackers into small pieces and toss with marshmallows and chocolate. Remove brownies and sprinkle marshmallow mixture over the top. Return to the oven another 15 to 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool before cutting into squares.

Strawberry S'mores
Serves 1

1 marshmallow
2 graham cracker halves
1 piece of milk chocolate
1 strawberry, sliced

Roast marshmallow until golden brown and then add to one half of a graham cracker that's been covered with the piece of chocolate and strawberry slices. Add other half of the graham cracker and enjoy.

Juliette Gordon Low

History of Girl Scouts

Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of Girl Scouts in the United States, was a remarkable achiever. She set high ideals for the world and for her fellow women. During a time when women were restrained by society, Juliette Gordon Low set a precedent for young women to follow even today.

Juliette Gordon was born in Savannah, Georgia on Halloween (October 31) in 1860. She was a bright and talented girl known to her friends and family as Daisy. Her cheerful personality encouraged the respect of all of her peers, however Juliette had her own cross to bear. Throughout her life struggles with her hearing gradually worsened, but Juliette never let these obstacles stand in her way.

Juliette later married William Low, an Englishman. Her horizons were broadened when she went off to live in England and Scotland. Unfortunately, the marriage was not what had been hoped. William Low died while preparations for divorce were being undertaken. After this, Juliette decided it was time to see the world. She eventually settled in Paris where she planned to study sculpture. However, a new acquaintance, Sir Robert (later Lord) Baden-Powell, set her life in an entirely new direction.

Sir Robert was a former English General and war hero. He started the Boy Scout movement in 1908 and met Juliette Gordon Low three years later. He and his sister had a tremendous impact on Juliette in their involvement with the new generation.

Boy Scouts had become tremendously popular and had spread to several countries besides England at this time. However, the young women in England began to feel the need for similar organizations among themselves. Several of these type of groups were organized by young ladies into clubs similar to the Boy Scouts. When Sir Robert learned of the thriving interest in scouting among young women, he asked his sister, Agnes, to form an organization for them. Girl Guides were thus established in 1910. The next year there were Girl Guide or Scout organizations in Australia, South Africa, and Finland. By 1912 it had spread even further, into Sweden, Denmark, Poland, and Canada.

This new movement of Girl Guides/Scouts was exactly what Juliette Gordon Low had been searching for. She became very involved in it, even moving back to Scotland to lead a troop. However, Juliette realized that the young women in the United States were missing a wonderful opportunity. She promptly returned home to Savannah where she called a friend saying, "Come right over. I've got something for the girls of Savannah, and all America, and all the world, and we're going to start it tonight."

In 1912, women were facing many old struggles. Their education was limited and so were their futures. However, as the dawn of World War I approached women realized that their role was a vital one. Organizations such as Girl Scouts and Girl Guides were especially important at this time to the development of a new, stronger, and more gifted young woman.

The first troop meeting of Girl Scouts in the United States was held in Savannah on March 12, 1912.Juliette Low's girls were able to contribute to the war effort in their community. These young women were able to actively participate as valued citizens who were concerned about their future.

The first American Girl Scout handbook was written by Walter John Hoxie, a naturalist. This book reflected many stereotypes of the time, making many references to the arts of "housewivery." However, there was a marked emphasis on ecology and physical fitness which attended to the promise of a new American girl in the years to come. In 1916, Juliette Low adapted a newer version of the Girl Scout Handbook. This book included an aviation badge, a new height for the all girl organization.

Juliette Low was a firm believer in letting the girls run their own troops. Adults involved in the troops were advisers, not leaders. When she died on January 18, 1927 she inspired the founding of the Juliette Low World Friendship Fund. This organization uses its money to send American girls to other countries and bring other girls to visit the United States.
